By 1965, only about 10 percent of American homes had central A/C. Families would make do by sleeping outdoors, in basements or chilling their underclothes before wearing them. With advancements in technology, A/C units became increasingly more affordable for the average household. By 2007, 86 percent of homes featured central A/C.
